Building your very own Pickleball Court

Our number one tip on how to build a pickleball court is to engage a professional to build it for you or to have a consultant take you through the process. Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport in Australia it combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It can be played indoors or outdoors on a court that is roughly the same size of a badminton court. Building a pickleball court involves several key steps. Here’s a straightforward guide:

1. Choose a Location

Select a flat, level area with enough space (at least 20×44 feet for a single court). Ensure good drainage and accessibility, for ultimate durability. If drainage is going to be an issue you may need to investigate installing a draignage system.

2. Determine Court Dimensions

A standard pickleball court measures 20 feet wide by 44 feet long for doubles play.Mark the dimensions on the ground using stakes and string, ensure you have enough space around the edges of your pickleball court in case you decide to install fencing around your court space.

3. Prepare the Surface

Clear the area of grass, rocks, and debris from your court area. You need to ensure the ground is levelled this may involve escavating or filling the area to ensure you have a flat surface.

4. Choose a Surface Material

Common options include asphalt, concrete, or sport tiles. Concrete is durable and low maintenance, while asphalt can be more economical.

5. Install the Surface

Pour concrete or lay asphalt, ensuring it’s smooth and level. If using tiles, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.

6. Mark the Court Lines

Use white tape or paint to mark the court lines:

Baselines: 20 feet wide at each end.
Sidelines: 44 feet long on the sides.
Non-Volley Zone: 7 feet from the net on both sides.
Centreline: Divides the service area.

7. Install the Net

The net should be 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches at the centre. Use sturdy posts to secure the net at each end.

8. Add Finishing Touches

Install fencing if desired, to keep the ball in play. Consider adding seating areas or shade structures nearby.

9. Maintenance

Regularly check the surface for cracks or damage and keep the court clean and free of debris. Ensure you have your serviced regulary.
